The United Apostolic Church (UAC) is the result of an inspired vision by Pastor Michael Edwards and his wife, Minister Doris Edwards in 1983.
This vision came to fruition on February 9, 1984, when the property at 205-24/26 Hollis Avenue was first offered up for lease and subsequently for sale. This location housed a bar, fish and chips restaurant, and an HVAC company. At its inception, the church’s membership consisted of nine members and the building provided a seating capacity for eight chairs with a center aisle. Pastor Edwards, using his knowledge of carpentry, and with the assistance of the members, was able to refurbish the building into a House of Worship; even using the bar’s counter for the base of the platform. There was no doubt that God’s hand was in this ministry and within six months, there was a need for additional seating. This resulted in an expansion and culminated into a 250-seat facility, which was dedicated on September 8, 1990. UAC has many vibrant ministries and on a daily basis, transforms, renews, and empowers lives.
In 2013, Pastor and Sis Edwards after 30 years of service prayerfully passed the pastorate of the Church to Rev. Lloyd Tucker and Sis Maxine Tucker. During that period, Pastor and Sis. Tucker along with the members labored untiringly to effectively minister to the daily needs and expansion of the growing assembly. They were instrumental in guiding the church body as they grieved the passing of co-founder, Minister Doris Edwards, in 2015. In 2018, Pastor Edwards resumed pastoral leadership. Along with Sis. Eileen Edwards, the ministers, and the members continue to chart the way forward to realize the God-given mandate of the United Apostolic Church. In 2020, Pastor and Sis Eileen Edwards prayerfully passed the pastorate of the Church to Rev. Leon Gordon and Sis. Astenett Gordon as Senior Pastor and Rev. Charles Barrett Sr. and Sis. Paulette Barrett as Associate Pastor of the Assembly. With this new leadership and its members, the vision of UAC is to expand the growth of its membership, and services to the community.
Through much perseverance and many obstacles, UAC’s new sanctuary, dedicated in 2008, seats over 800 and has a banquet hall. With this new edifice, one of UAC’s goals is to improve on community-based programs and provide various services to help meet the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods. Some of these services include a soup kitchen, immigration, housing, and employment.
