Scripture Text: St. Matthew 5:1-16
“13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” – St. Matthew 5:13-16.

Our Vision
Knowing Jesus and Making Him Known
What is Influence?
When leaders frequently assert authority, it can be a sign that they don't have influence. Instead of trying to find ways to increase their authority, it’s better for them to spend more time and effort to build influence.
1. Leadership is _____________ others with a _________ so they will adopt and mold it as their own.
In the church we look to key leaders to hear from God, set the pace, inspire, and cast vision. To be effective, the leader must allow others to share and develop the vision. The people seize the vision, and as they make their own commitments and contributions, it becomes their collective vision.
2. Leadership is ____________ others to go where they need to go to fulfill the ________.
Once people are inspired and catch the vision, a good leader motivates them to accomplish the vision, to do what is necessary to fulfill the vision.
3. Leadership is ____________.
Although spiritual leaders have authority, in practice they can only lead to the extent that they have influence. In a business setting, employees can be motivated by financial rewards and by fear of losing employment. In the kingdom of God, the primary motivation is ministry and influence.
The most effective motivation is positive. When spiritual leaders serve people, they build trust and influence. This process doesn't work by efforts designed to impress or obligate, but by sincere love and care.
4. Influence is like ________________________.
We earn money and deposit it in the bank so it's available when we need it. Of course, we must make more deposits than withdrawals. Likewise, as we serve people, we build influence.
As leaders we must be careful not to overdraw our influence account, not to make withdrawals too often, and always to make more deposits than withdrawals. Leaders need wisdom to know when to act and when to refrain.
5. Leadership extends only as far as the _____________ has gone.
We can't lead past where we have gone ourselves. We can tell people what to do, but unless we have done it ourselves, we probably won't be effective.
6. The power to ________________ is the power to lead.
In the nonprofit, volunteer setting of the church, we cannot offer the same type of incentives as a secular business. Our primary motivation is vision, and our means of casting vision is communication. We explain the vision, repeat it, and show progress by various forms of communication.
Good communication helps drive out bad communication such as rumor, speculation, criticism, and negativity. Regular communication creates a positive atmosphere, keeps people connected, and encourages participation.
7. Leadership involves _____________ and _______________.
Much of a leader's success depends on assistants and followers. Therefore, one of his or her most important responsibilities is to teach, train, and mentor. The leader's goal isn't to do all the work but to develop an effective team that can fulfill the vision. Ultimately, leaders are not successful unless they establish a plan to extend and perpetuate leadership at every level.
What is Accountability?
All Christians are to be accountable, and leaders are no exception. We often think of spiritual leaders in terms of authority, but along with authority come responsibility and accountability.
1. ___________
Each of us must cultivate a personal relationship with God, including the basic spiritual disciplines.
2. __________
Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are stewards of our physical and emotional lives. God has both created and redeemed us, and He has given us life, health, strength time, and ability. We are to use these gifts wisely. To serve God effectively, we must make good choices concerning rest, relaxation, exercise, and diet. The key is balance.
3. __________
We shouldn't choose ministry over family, but family is part of our ministry. We shouldn't make major life or ministry decisions without the support of our spouse. Even if we think our spouse is wrong, we need our spouse's cooperation to be successful, so we should pray, communicate, and seek godly counsel until we reach a consensus. Likewise, we need to consider the impact of major decisions upon our children. Sometimes these considerations lead us to change our timing or seek an alternate means to our call and burden.
4. _______________________
We must be accountable to our pastor and other spiritual mentors.
5. __________________
Leaders need relationships with peers who have the right to speak into their lives, such as friends, associates, prayer partners, and accountability partners. These are people with whom we speak candidly, compare notes, and discuss common situations and goal. We can safely confide in and seek advice from them. They should have the right to ask how we are doing, express a concern, or even warn.
6. __________________
Leaders are accountable to their followers in many ways, such as by reports to the church body and church board.
7. _________________
We are accountable to the worldwide church, the family of God, and especially our own organization.
